Bandit Classic Rock streams golden-era rock anthems live from Sweden, built on the identity of one of Stockholm's most storied rock stations. It plays free on Radio Shuffle, no account or download required.
An American Expat's Cult Station
The Bandit name goes back to January 1994, when American expatriate Thomas McAlevey launched Bandit Radio in Stockholm, branding it The Rock Home of Stockholm, according to Wikipedia. Its English-speaking DJs and album-oriented rock format, delivered with an irreverent attitude unusual for Swedish radio at the time, turned the station into something close to a cult favorite in its early years.
That independence didn't last. McAlevey and a group of private investors sold the station in 1996 to CLT Multi Media, which later became part of the RTL Group, ending its run as an independently owned upstart just two years after launch.
A 2004 Relaunch Built a Rock Institution
The station went through further ownership and format changes before relaunching under its current name, Bandit Rock, in 2004. From there it expanded steadily, adding a Södertälje signal in 2005 and reaching Gothenburg by 2008, broadcasting today at 101.9 MHz in Stockholm and 101.1 MHz in Uppsala as part of the Nordic Entertainment Group's radio portfolio. The relaunched station earned the Stora Radio Priset, the Swedish Radio Academy's award for Årets PLR-Station, in 2006, formal recognition of how far the format had come from its scrappy 1994 debut.
