Balearic FM is a 24/7 internet radio station streaming house music in the Ibiza spirit: deep, soulful, organic, progressive, tech and nu-disco house from DJs around the world. It broadcasts online only, and you can hear it live on Radio Shuffle for free, with no account and no app.
What Balearic FM Plays
The station's home page describes its output as Balearic house music day and night, and its About page spells out the range: deep house, soulful house, organic, progressive, disco variants and tech house, with the likes of Frankie Knuckles and David Morales named as influences. It is just as clear about what it leaves out, namely EDM, mainstream pop and hip-hop. Show titles such as "Rhythm & Bliss," "Open Skies" and "The Golden Coast Ritual," listed on the station's site, give a good sense of the warm, sunset-friendly mood.
A Station Without a Studio
Balearic FM has no central studio or office. According to its About page, it launched in 2019 as a passion project incorporated in the United States, funded by the DJs and owners themselves with light website advertising to offset costs. DJs either go live from wherever they happen to be or upload recorded sets from venues and home studios, and the schedule is filled by a large rotating library of one and two hour sets that grows every week. The name is about spirit rather than geography: "Balearic" and "FM" stand for the feeling of dance music's history, and directories list Ibiza to reflect that cultural home. The technical side runs on open-source streaming software and content delivery networks so listeners anywhere get a stable feed.
The Balearic Spirit
The word itself has a real history. As Wikipedia's Balearic beat entry explains, the style emerged on Ibiza in the mid-1980s, popularised by Argentine DJ Alfredo Fiorito at the Amnesia nightclub, who mixed indie, house, pop and rock without regard for genre borders. British DJs including Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling and Trevor Fung carried the sound to London after a 1987 Ibiza holiday, and Oakenfold's Spectrum night in 1988 spread it further. The entry stresses that Balearic is less a rigid genre than a DJ's freedom to play across soul, Latin, African, funk and dub, which is exactly the outlook that lets a station like this hop between deep house and disco.
Live Sets and Mixes
Beyond the stream, the station keeps archives and shows on Mixcloud and SoundCloud and has its own mobile app, and it actively recruits new DJs to expand its live hours. If you like your house music warm, unhurried and full of piano stabs and vocals, this is a welcoming corner of the internet.
