Built to break FM out of AM's shadow
Antena 1 was founded in 1974 by entrepreneur Orlando Negrão Júnior and officially launched in São Paulo in 1975, at a time when, according to the Portuguese Wikipedia entry on the network, most Brazilian FM stations simply replayed their AM sister stations' programming rather than building anything of their own. Antena 1 broke that pattern, launching with independent programming aimed at young listeners through pop rock before shifting toward the adult contemporary format that defines the network today.
From one São Paulo signal to a satellite-linked network
By the late 1980s Antena 1 had become one of the pioneering Brazilian networks in automated satellite transmission, and it earned recognition as the country's first radio network to broadcast exclusively on FM at a national level. That satellite backbone let the company expand steadily across Brazil's five regions, building out affiliates in cities including Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Vitória, and Brasília, alongside this Porto Alegre signal serving Rio Grande do Sul, growing the network to roughly two dozen stations.
A signal that reaches all the way to Rome
Antena 1's reach extends beyond Brazil's borders entirely. The network maintains a partner station based in Rome, Italy, an unusual international link for a Brazilian FM network built originally around one independent São Paulo signal in the mid-1970s.
