The North of England's First Full-Time Punjabi Station

Listen Now

Akash Radio Leeds carries a specific historical distinction, it was the first Punjabi radio station in the North of England to hold a full-time broadcast licence. Running on 1323 AM and DAB across Leeds, Bradford, and West Yorkshire, the station built a permanent home on the dial for a community that had been settling in these industrial cities for the better part of a century.

A Community Older Than Its Own Radio Station

Punjabi and wider South Asian migration to Leeds and neighboring Bradford dates back to the 1940s and 1950s, when workers were recruited to staff the wool mills and factories that powered the region's industrial economy. Sikh settlement around Chapeltown Road in Leeds started small, only around 50 people by the 1950s, but grew steadily over the following decades into one of Yorkshire's most established South Asian communities. Akash Radio arrived generations after that first wave, formally incorporating as Akash Radio Leeds Ltd on 17 October 2013, giving a long-settled community its own dedicated broadcast voice.

Volunteer-Run, Community-Owned

The station operates as a not-for-profit run by volunteers rather than a commercial broadcaster chasing advertising revenue. That structure shapes its entire schedule, built around service to the community rather than ratings, holding an Ofcom community radio licence, CR100143BA/2, that legally distinguishes it from commercial stations competing for the same audience.

Faith, Music, and News in One Feed

Programming opens the day with Gurbani and Kirtan broadcast directly from Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, the Golden Temple, before moving through Bollywood and Hindi hits, traditional folk and Sufi music, and Bhangra alongside contemporary desi tracks. Community talk shows and local and international news round out a schedule built to function as a full media diet for its listeners rather than a single-genre music stream.

Keeping an Aging Signal Alive

Running a volunteer AM and DAB station comes with real infrastructure costs, and Akash Radio has turned to public fundraising to replace aging studio equipment and computers and keep both its AM/MW and DAB+ signals on air. It is the kind of unglamorous maintenance work that keeps a station broadcasting decade after decade, less visible than the programming itself but just as essential to it.

A Voice Built to Outlast a Single Generation

A community radio station serving a population whose Yorkshire roots stretch back seventy years carries a responsibility beyond entertainment. Akash Radio Leeds functions as connective tissue between generations, elders who remember the mills and younger listeners who grew up in Leeds, both served by the same signal.
