Born from a split in blindness advocacy

The American Council of the Blind traces its founding to July 7, 1961, when it formed out of the dissolution of the Braille Free Press Association as a direct alternative to the American Foundation for the Blind, according to Wikipedia's history of the organization. The council grew into one of the country's largest blindness advocacy groups, a membership-driven alternative that has run alongside other national organizations in the decades since, including a historic 2013 vote that made Kim Charlson the first woman to lead a major national blindness advocacy group in the United States.

A community feed inside a ten-channel network

ACB Media now runs roughly ten live streams through its digital hub at acbmedia.org, reachable through a web browser, the ACB Link iPhone app, Amazon Alexa, a Victor Reader player, or dial-in access for programs that originate over Zoom. ACB Media 5 carries the network's Community programming, built around listener-facing segments rather than news or literature readings. The feed's recurring lineup includes a Friday night Play Time games show, a Sports Roundtable, and a discussion series called In Perspective, alongside coverage of ACB-sponsored community events, technology help sessions, cooking talk, and even meditation-style programming, drawn from the schedule behind the network's own ACB Community podcast feed.

Built for an audience radio often overlooks

Radio reading services like ACB Media exist because mainstream broadcasting rarely builds programming around a blind or low-vision audience's specific needs, access to print information, community connection, and content delivered in formats that work without a screen. ACB Media 5's games nights and roundtable talk shows turn that mission into something closer to a community hangout than a formal information service, a channel built for listeners to participate in rather than just receive.
