Four names, half a dozen formats
This frequency first signed on June 1, 1948 as WJR-FM, simulcasting its AM sister station before eventually branching out on its own, according to the station's format history. In 1969 it flipped to an automated Drake-Chenault format called "Solid Gold Rock and Roll," branding itself "California Radio" with a mix of soft rock, adult contemporary chart hits, and oldies. The call letters became WHYT in 1982 under Capital Cities Communications, then WPLT in 1997, before settling on WDVD in 2001.
In between those call sign changes, the station cycled through an unusually wide run of formats: beautiful music, rock, Top 40, rhythmic contemporary, a hip-hop leaning sound, and even alternative rock, before landing on the adult contemporary format it carries today. Its most commercially dominant stretch came between 1986 and 1991 as "Power 96," when it regularly landed in the top five of Detroit's Arbitron ratings competing directly against the market's urban and rhythmic stations.
A stunt that announced a new era
One format flip in particular stands out. When the station relaunched as "Alternative Classics" in September 1999, it marked the switch by looping the same song continuously for three straight hours before finally opening up the new playlist, a promotional stunt built purely to make listeners notice something had changed. That kind of reinvention has been a constant throughout the station's history, long before it eventually arrived at the softer, broader adult contemporary format that defines it now under current owner Cumulus Media.
