Launched as 80s80s's Younger Sibling
90s90s went on air on November 29, 2016, built by German broadcaster Regiocast as a direct follow-up to its existing 80s80s station, according to the network's history. The company had already proven a single-decade format could hold an audience with 80s80s, so it applied the same playbook to the following ten years rather than inventing a new concept from scratch. Production moved into dedicated studios in Berlin in spring 2017, and by January 2, 2023, the main program had grown into full nationwide coverage on Germany's second national DAB+ multiplex, a jump from livestream-only reach to a guaranteed signal on car radios across the country.
One Flagship, Dozens of Spin-Off Channels
Rather than settle for a single playlist, Regiocast built 90s90s into a sprawling family of more than 20 curated streams branching off the main channel, covering everything from Eurodance, Techno and Trance to Britpop, Grunge, Hiphop, Lovesongs and even a channel built around the Loveparade era. Regional spin-offs for Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia sit alongside curated feeds like the techno channel developed with producer Tom Wax.
