Calgary's News, Talk and Sports Radio

Listen Now

770 CHQR streams news, talk and sports live from Calgary, Alberta, and ranked as the most-listened-to station in the Calgary market as of winter 2021. You can stream it free right now on Radio Shuffle, wherever you are in the world.

Calgary's Sixth Station, on a Frequency That Moved

CHQR first went on air August 15, 1964 at 810 kHz, making it Calgary's sixth radio station, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. The CRTC approved a move to 770 kHz on June 26, 1986, the frequency the station still carries today, and CHQR eventually became the last AM station in the Calgary market still broadcasting in C-QUAM AM stereo.

An FM Experiment That Didn't Stick

Owner Corus Entertainment has tried more than once to extend CHQR's reach onto FM. A 2011 application for an FM rebroadcaster at 106.9 MHz was denied by the CRTC in May 2012. A decade later, Corus simulcast CHQR on sister station CFGQ-FM starting January 2023 under a joint QR Calgary rebrand, then applied in spring 2023 to make the FM signal the primary one and shut down the AM license entirely, citing rising interference and automakers removing AM radios from electric vehicles. Corus reversed course in mid-2024, withdrawing the application and ending the simulcast after acknowledging it "had not been economically successful the way we had hoped," and CFGQ relaunched as a separate alternative rock station, The Edge, on July 31, 2024.

The Exclusive Voice of Calgary Football, and Now Hockey

CHQR has long served as the exclusive radio voice of the Calgary Stampeders, and that sports portfolio grew significantly in 2026 when the Calgary Flames announced a five-year deal moving their NHL broadcasts to CHQR starting with the 2026-27 season. The Flames' previous radio home, CFAC, shut down on July 7, 2026 as part of cuts by Rogers Radio, leaving CHQR to pick up a major hockey franchise just as it settled back into AM-only operation.

Tune In

From a 1964 launch on 810 kHz to surviving an abandoned FM handover and landing the Calgary Flames' broadcast rights in 2026, 770 CHQR remains Calgary's most-listened station. Stream it free on Radio Shuffle to hear it live.
