Launched by Media Personalities, Not a Network

2Day FM began broadcasting on August 2, 1980, one of the first commercial FM licenses granted in Sydney alongside Triple M, after technical difficulties pushed back the planned July 11 launch date, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. Its original owners were not a media conglomerate but three well-known media personalities, John Laws, Mike Willesee, and Graham Kennedy, an unusual starting point for a station that would go on to become one of Sydney's most recognized FM brands.

Easy Listening First, Pop Later

To differentiate itself from Sydney's existing AM stations, 2Day FM launched with an easy listening format rather than chasing the same hit-driven approach as its competitors. That initial identity did not last forever, as ownership changes reshaped the station's direction over the following decade.

Two Ownership Changes in Two Years

Broadcast Investments, under the Lamb family, bought the station in 1987, and just two years later, in 1989, Austereo acquired it, bringing 2Day FM into one of Australia's major commercial radio groups. That consolidation under Austereo set the stage for the station's shift toward the pop and entertainment format more associated with the 2Day FM name in the decades since.
