A Second Attempt That Actually Stuck
Community radio in Glen Innes did not come easily. According to a report in the Glen Innes Examiner, a local station had been attempted roughly 30 years before the current one and failed for lack of local support. The organisation behind today's station, Deepwater and Districts Community FM Radio Inc., was incorporated in April 1997, and volunteers spent years afterward holding community meetings and working with the Glen Innes Severn Council before the station began broadcasting in the early 2000s as the town's first lasting community radio service.
A New Home, Opened by a Deputy Prime Minister
The station consolidated its operations in 2016, when the Glen Innes Radio Centre opened as its new studio home, with Deepwater continuing on as a re-transmitter of the Glen Innes signal rather than a separate studio. The opening drew a notable name: then-Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce cut the ribbon on the new premises, which the local council helped fund with a $25,000 grant. The station has kept investing in its infrastructure since, more recently securing state funding for a studio upgrade on Church Street and working through a lengthy approval process to install a new transmitter.
Broadcasting From Celtic Country
Glen Innes carries an unusual cultural identity for an Australian country town, built on the Scottish, Cornish and Welsh heritage of the pastoralists and miners who settled the district. That heritage is physically marked by the Australian Standing Stones, a circle of granite monoliths inaugurated in 1992 to honour the Celtic peoples who helped pioneer the country, and the town now hosts the Australian Celtic Festival around them every year. A volunteer station serving a town with that kind of self-aware heritage carries more than just the news and footy scores, it carries the identity of a community that built a monument to explain itself.
