Every year on August 24th, something unusual happens across Uruguay: the entire country dresses up, goes out, and dances exclusively to music from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s until dawn. It's called the Noche de la Nostalgia, and it's the only state-sanctioned national celebration of golden oldies in the world. The date even inspired an internet radio station that carries that spirit year-round: 24 de Agosto, broadcasting classic rock, golden oldies, and retro hits 24/7 from Montevideo.

Born From a Date That Defines Uruguay

The story starts on August 24, 1978. Pablo Lecueder, director of the radio show "Old Hits" on CX-32 Radiomundo, couldn't get a venue to host a party on a weekend. The only solution was to choose the eve of a national holiday, Uruguay's Declaration of Independence on August 25. He held the party, played nothing but oldies, and the night was such a hit it became an annual tradition. By the mid-1980s it was advertised nationwide. In 2004, the Uruguayan government officially designated August 24 as the "Noche de la Nostalgia" by law, with the Ministry of Tourism actively promoting it.

Today, more than 600,000 Uruguayans go out to celebrate the night every year, drawing visitors from Argentina and Brazil. Dance clubs, radio stations, and events across every city play exclusively music from past decades, and every song played must be at least two decades old. The radio station 24 de Agosto carries that same commitment every day, not just once a year.

Classic Rock and Oldies, the Uruguayan Way

The station is rooted in the classic rock and golden oldies format, broadcasting from Montevideo via RadioCa.st streaming infrastructure. The playlist mirrors what you'd hear on a great Noche de la Nostalgia dancefloor: international hits that defined the decades, heavy on English-language rock and pop from the golden era.

  • Classic Rock, the backbone of the station. Think the kind of tracks that still fill stadiums decades later, guitar-forward and built to last, drawing from the deep catalog that shaped modern rock.
  • Golden Oldies, the nostalgic pop and rock hits of the 50s through 70s that the Noche de la Nostalgia was built around. The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Simon and Garfunkel, the Bee Gees; the songs that started the whole tradition.
  • Retro International Hits, extending the format into the 80s and 90s to reflect how the Noche has evolved over the decades, incorporating new generations' definitions of "nostalgia".

It's a deliberately timeless format. You're not going to hear anything released last month. The station functions as a radio archive of the songs people loved before the algorithm decided what they should listen to.

Uruguay's Relationship With Nostalgia

Uruguay has the oldest population in Latin America, and Uruguayans are culturally known for being nostalgic. Even the country's most famous popular music, tango, tends toward the melancholic and sentimental. The Noche de la Nostalgia taps directly into that national character: a desire to remember, a genuine affection for the past, and a communal celebration of music that connected generations.

Montevideo's radio culture has been strong since 1924, when Radio Monte Carlo first went on air. The city has produced some of the most distinctive radio voices in Latin America, and oldies-format stations have always found an audience here. 24 de Agosto fits naturally into that tradition, extending the Noche de la Nostalgia ethos into a continuous stream available anywhere in the world.
