One loop stream inside a bigger lineup
1LIVE itself launched on 1 April 1995 as West German broadcaster WDR's answer to an aging flagship station, built to reach a younger North Rhine-Westphalia audience under the mission of staying "provokant, anders und immer in Bewegung," provocative, different and always moving. Top Hits is one of the loop streams WDR built around that main FM signal for listeners who want a specific mood without flipping through the schedule, sitting alongside sibling streams like Dance Hits, Hip Hop & R'n'B, Rock Hits and a Chillout channel, each running as its own continuous feed rather than a scheduled show.
A lineup still being reshuffled
WDR keeps adjusting that bouquet of youth-focused brands. Trade coverage from turi2, citing DWDL, reports that WDR plans to retire its Cosmo and 1LIVE Diggi stations from April 2027 and replace them with two new formats, 1Live Street, aimed at an urban hip-hop audience, and 1Live Lounge. Top Hits is not part of that overhaul, continuing to run as the network's dedicated chart-hits stream as the rest of the lineup changes around it.
