The Evening Shift on a Daytime Pop Station
Plan B runs on 1LIVE, the station West German Broadcasting (WDR) launched on April 1, 1995 to replace the aging WDR 1 and reach younger listeners across North Rhine-Westphalia, according to Wikipedia's history of the network. Where the station's daytime hosts run contemporary hit radio built for a broad 14-to-39 audience, Plan B has carried the evening slot specifically built around more alternative and lesser-known music, the show WDR itself describes as the spot where hosts play music that is deliberately less mainstream than anything heard earlier in the day.
A Rotating Cast of Hosts
Plan B has changed hands between presenters over the years rather than staying fixed to one voice, with WDR documentation naming pairings including Bianca Hauda and David Krause, and later Tillmann Köllner alternating with Franziska Niesar, running the show Monday through Thursday evenings. That rotation keeps the specialist evening slot alive across different hosting eras while holding onto the same basic premise: give alternative music its own dedicated hour after the mainstream daytime schedule winds down.
