A Specialist Show Inside a National Youth Station
1LIVE Fiehe is named for and hosted by Klaus Fiehe, a DJ whose program has carried the specialist electronic slot on 1LIVE, the youth station West German Broadcasting (WDR) launched on April 1, 1995 to replace the aging WDR 1 and reach a younger North Rhine-Westphalia audience, according to Wikipedia's history of the network. Where 1LIVE's main daytime schedule runs contemporary hit radio aimed at listeners 14 to 39, Fiehe's slot has long been the place on the station reserved for music too left-field for the main feed.
Krautrock Roots, Modern Electronic Reach
The channel's genre mix, ambient, drum and bass, dubstep, freestyle, krautrock and minimal, deliberately spans decades rather than chasing one current micro-trend. Krautrock itself is a genuinely German invention, the experimental rock movement bands like Can and Kraftwerk built out of late-1960s West Germany, and its influence runs in a direct line to the more minimal and ambient electronic music the channel plays today. Running that lineage alongside newer dubstep and drum and bass makes the channel less a current-chart feed and more a specialist's own record collection, broadcast nationally through WDR's resources instead of staying local.
