A Mix-First Channel on a Talk-Heavy Station
DJ Session runs as a specialist spin-off of 1LIVE, the youth station West German Broadcasting (WDR) launched on April 1, 1995 to reach a younger North Rhine-Westphalia audience, according to Wikipedia's history of the network. Where 1LIVE's main schedule is built around hosts, comedy, and contemporary hit radio for listeners 14 to 39, DJ Session strips that format away entirely, running continuous mixed sets the way a club DJ would build a night rather than the way a radio programmer builds a playlist.
Built for Electronic Music's Own Format
Electronic dance music has always worked differently from song-based radio, built on continuous mixing rather than three-minute tracks separated by talk breaks, and a channel like DJ Session exists precisely because that format doesn't fit comfortably inside a station built around hosted segments. By giving house, techno, and trance their own uninterrupted lane, the channel lets WDR's resources support a genre that a standard talk-and-music schedule would otherwise chop into pieces.
